Employment Background Checks - WARNING Signs
Employers should look for the following during the Hiring Process
Employers should look for the following during the Hiring Process
Background Checks are very important when it comes to the Employment Screening process, but looking at a criminal record report is not enough, other factors can contribute to whether or not a hiring manager decides to extend an offer to an applicant.
1. Inconsistencies in the Resume
It is important to look for inconsistencies when reading an applicant's resume. Comparing a comprehensive background check with information on the resume can assist with spotting inconsistencies such as fake education credentials, previous employment dates, etc. Inconsistencies in this information may be an indicator that the applicant is trying to hide something. The applicant should be given the opportunity to explain such inconsistencies.
2. Criminal Records
Criminal Records are the most important part of the employment background check reports to use during decision making. These reports provide an insight into the candidate's character as well as help employers avoid future confrontations and workplace violence. If an applicant was asked about a criminal history and the applicant didn't disclose something that showed up on the report, that should be considered a red flag.
3. Credit History
Credit Reports are not necessarily required for all employers or positions, but can be especially important when hiring for financial positions such as accounting functions or handling company money. Good credit is an indicator of a financially responsible person. Bad credit can be an indicator of a person under financial stress and less likely to handle company funds responsibly.
4. Reference Checks
Reference checks can be an important tool to get an idea of the applicant's character from other people they have worked with or acquaintances. AAACSS can provided reference checks on your behalf.
5. Prior Address Checks
Prior address checks assist in verifying various addresses that the applicant has lived in, and this assists in determining the counties that criminal record checks should be run in. Applicants will occasionally omit addresses in cities, states, etc. where they have convictions in an effort to pass a background check.
6. Degree Verification & Credential Verification
Candidates often embellish degrees or qualifications earned knowing that only 25% of employers run background checks. Running education and credential verification reports will confirm that the candidate is in fact qualified.
7. Driver License Check
Driving records are especially important if an employer is considering an applicant for a position in which they will use company vehicles. It is also an indicator or a responsible person and multiple tickets, accidents, failure to pay tickets can show signs of irresponsibility that could be reflected on the job.
These are just some indicators that employers should look at when considering a candidate for employment. If you have any questions or need help deciphering your report, please feel free to contact our knowledgeable staff and they would be happy to assist you.
