Summer Camp Employment Background Checks

Summer is approaching and soon many parents will be considering sending their children to a day or overnight summer camp. According to the American Camp Association (ACA), camps in the United States hire more than 1.5 million employees to work in various camp positions ¹. While state and federal regulations require many other institutions, such as daycare providers and residential child care providers, to perform a minimum of a state and national criminal record checks along with a search of registries for abuse and neglect, many summer camps fall into a grey area, wherein if they are not registered with an organization such as the ACA, they are not required by law or policy to complete employment background checks on their employees.

This fact is often alarming to parents, and for good reason. A 2016 study by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Sciences found that in some states across the country, there was a 135.3 percent increase in the number of child victims of abuse and neglect ². The same report noted that over 13 percent of abuse victims were maltreated by someone other than the child’s parent.

Parents, therefore, should be vigilant in their investigation of the employment or volunteer background check processes of the summer camps they are sending their children to.

Summer camps should actively advocate for and participate in volunteer and employment background screening to increase child safety. Summer camps without employment background checks are becoming increasingly rare and less appealing to parents.
